OUR TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM
- The Yakima Basin Environmental Education Program is an independent regional science enrichment program serving public, private, & homeschool teachers and students in Central Washington.
- The program provides hands-on teacher training, field experience, and professional mentoring, along with appropriate educational materials, supplies, and equipment.
- All aspects of our program are available at no cost to our participants!
- Teachers receive four training days per year for two years,led by natural resource professionals, with clock hours and reimbursement for subs available.
- Training and field experience cover a
wide range of subjects, including: salmon habitat and life cycle;
wildlife management; riparian, wetland, and aquatic habitats;
forests and watersheds; water quality monitoring; and water resource
utilization, management, and conservation.
- Following training, teachers replicate these lessons
and field trips with their students, involving students in
experiential cross-curriculum learning activities and projects.
- Educational goals include heightened environmental
awareness and appreciation, improved academic ability and
performance, and a greater sense of stewardship and community.
- During and after their training, teachers enjoy
free access to our support network, utilizing classroom and field
support personnel, program materials and equipment, and a vast
resource base.
- This program is now in its 16th year of
operation. More than 400 YBEEP trained teachers from 83 public & private
schools in 30 districts reach thousands of students. Each
year, 50 teachers throughout the region participate in training
workshops.
